Nikhat Zareen Won Gold Medal For India In World Boxing Championship
At the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain gave India a victory. Lovlina Borgohain won the gold medal in the 75 kg division, while Nikhat Zareen took first place in the 50 kg division. After Lovlina Borgohain’s 5-2 triumph over Australia’s Caitlin Parker in the championship match, Nikhat Zareen defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam 5-0 to win India’s third gold medal of the competition. Nitu Ghanghas (48 kg) and Saweety Boora (81 kg), two Indian wrestlers, both won gold in their respective weight classes on Saturday.
The defending World champion Nikhat (50 kg) defeated Nguyem Thi Tam of Vietnam to win gold for a second straight year at the competition, while Lovlina (75 kg), bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, won her first Worlds gold with a 5-2 victory on points over Caitlin Parker of Australia after the match was reviewed.
Zareen has excelled as a champion and has frequently brought honor to India, said PM Modi in a tweet congratulating her.
With this triumph, Nikhat joined boxing superstar Mary Kom, who has won a competition record of six gold medals, as the only other Indian female fighter to earn two gold medals in the World Championships.
The other gold medalists for the hosts were Saweety Boora (81 kg), a three-time Asian medalist, and Nitu Ghanghas (48 kg), a medalist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Each fighter received INR 82.7 lakhs ($100,000) as prize money for winning the World Championship.
